Anthony saw his points-per-game average go down marginally

“NBA 2K17” projects a Cavs team with Carmelo Anthony to finish the regular season 55-27 (25-13 from this point on). The Cavs in their current form with Love are seen as a 54-28 team (24-14 from this point on).

Statistically, Anthony saw his points-per-game average go down marginally, but his rebounds and assists rose over his New York days. Compared with Love, the Cavs gained about three points and two assists with Melo, but in doing so lost five rebounds.

The one-game regular season difference was inconsequential in playoff seeding. Cleveland was the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference in all but one simulation (where Toronto managed to finish above them). They ended up having home court throughout, however, when the Raptors were bounced in the second round of that particular sim. The Golden State Warriors always finished as the team with the best record overall.

The Cowboys cut Whitehead after learning that he had reportedly missed a court date July 6.

However, Rich told ESPN Monday the 25-year-old player had been on a flight from Dallas to Washington, D.C., that landed about 10 hours after the alleged incident took place.

Whitehead himself had told Cowboys coach Jason Garrett Monday he had nothing to do with the incident.

Rapoport told Inside Training Camp Live Monday that while the Cowboys had a right to cut Whitehead, he likely has legal recourse with the police.

“There are a lot of questions, including how did police identify him as the person on the scene when he was in a different state? … A lot of questions here, but from my understanding, I would think the Cowboys can cut him whenever they want,” Rapoport said. “But he certainly would have an issue with the police if what the agent is telling me is true — if the police did (make an) error in claiming that Whitehead was arrested.”

Whitehead, a third-year player out of Florida Atlantic, was battling for a roster spot in a crowded Cowboys receiving corps. He had a combined nine catches for 64 yards in his first two seasons.rangers_567-115x115

there is always an element of surprise when the big leagues come calling.

“We’re just all kind of blessed,” Montgomery said. “It’s a great time to be a young Yankee right now. We all just kind of fit in right at the perfect time and it all happened so quick and we’re here. We’re all still fairly young.”

Despite all the effort and time spent, there is always an element of surprise when the big leagues come calling. There’s a sense of gratitude, too.

“With how baseball’s transitioned into a younger generation it’s definitely helping these younger guys get an opportunity a lot earlier in their career,” Frazier, whom the Yankees acquired from Cleveland last summer, said.

“I never thought that I was going to play for the New York Yankees ’cause I was with the Indians, so everything happens unexpectedly. I’m honestly saying this: I’m thrilled to be here and I’m proud to be a New York Yankee.”

Blue Jays (at Red Sox)
Status heading into series: 42-49, 5.5 back in the wild-card, 9 back in the AL East
Need to know: That still looks like a potentially powerful offense, and if starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez stays healthy to team with Marcus Stroman and J.A. Happ, that’s a solid top of the rotation, too. And closer Roberto Osuna made the All-Star squad. This feels like a team that could still win a postseason series or two, right? And remember that 40-18 finish to the 2015 season that led to the franchise’s first playoff berth since 1993?

On other hand: They’re seven games under .500. After crawling their way back to within a game of the .500 mark at 35-36, they’re just 7-13, which is tied for the worst record in the AL. If they decide to sell, Josh Donaldson (free agent after 2018) and Marcus Stroman (contenders love young cost-controlled starters) could bring back huge returns.

LaVar and Lonzo’s Big Baller dream is worth watching

One day, there will be a book written, a class taught or a documentary made about how, in the late 2010s, the nation became obsessed with the father of one teenage basketball player and was completely unable to quit him.

Many have said, and keep saying, LaVar Ball has to stop whatever he’s doing. They can’t stand it anymore.

Here’s an opposing view: LaVar should keep doing it.

Clippers center Marreese Speights had just one point and zero rebounds while playing 11 minutes in the first half of Tuesday’s 96-92 loss to the Jazz. He was benched after halftime as 39-year-old Paul Pierce began the second half in the post. The 29-year-old Speights did not score in the second half in only two minutes of action. Pierce had six points and three boards in 14 total minutes.

Eric Gordon may have had just eight points on 3-of-10 shooting, but he did throw down a monster dunk in the second quarter. He caught the ball behind the 3-point line, from which he went just 1 of 8, but blew past Doug McDermott for the drive to the hoop.

Game 5: Bulls at Celtcis, 8:30 p.m. ET (Series tied 2-2) — After each team won two games on the other’s home floor, the Celtics will try to win back home-court advantage at TD Garden. Isaiah Thomas and Jimmy Butler have led the way for their respective teams. Whomever gets the most help Wednesday will likely be the one with his team holding the series lead.

Carmelo Anthony wasn’t putting up big numbers in D’Antoni’s offense and gave the Knicks an ultimatum.

My teammate went and told my coaches, ‘They were calling Jeremy a ch—k the whole first half.’ I didn’t say anything, because when that stuff happens, I kind of just, I go and bottle up where I go into turtle mode and don’t say anything and just internalize everything.
Accordig to Lin, that moment was a turning point because an assistant coach told him a story about racism he dealt with as a player. The coach told him he needs to find a way to use that to motivate him, and Lin says he did just that, and still does it when he hears taunts today.

Ultimately, D’Antoni resigned from the Knicks, but in a feature with ESPN The Magazine, the coach reveals what was kind of already known: he was forced out. Carmelo Anthony wasn’t putting up big numbers in D’Antoni’s offense and gave the Knicks an ultimatum.

Here’s how D’Antoni describes it, via ESPN:

In New York in 2012, after Anthony said the team needed to choose between him and D’Antoni, Mike made it easy. I just went in and quit, he says. Don’t say ‘quit,’ Laurel says. I hate that word. You resigned. You walked away. Mutually walked away. Mike rolls his eyes and turns to me. I quit, he says.

I remember it like it was yesterday, Durant said. All the strength coaches were laughing at me and s—. They were giggling with each other that I couldn’t lift 185 pounds, and I was like, ‘All right, keep laughing. Keep laughing.’ It was a funny thing, because I was the only one that couldn’t lift it and I was struggling to lift it. I was embarrassed at that point, but I’m like, ‘Give me a basketball, please. Give me a ball.’

These days the combine is televised, but back then the results were kept secret only among those who needed to know. But the Seattle Times obtained a report from the camp and wrote a story asking if Durant needed to have Buyer Beware stickers on him. The Times reported Durant’s overall performance ranked 78th out of 80 prospects.

Derek Fisher charged with 2 counts of DUI for crash, report says

Derek Fisher has been arraigned on two counts of DUI stemming from the June 5 incident in which he flipped his SUV, TMZ Sports reported.

Fisher, 42, could face up to six months in jail if convicted on both counts, according to TMZ, but as a first-time offender he’ll likely get probation, be fined and/or ordered to undergo alcohol counseling.

Fisher was driving with his girlfriend, former “Basketball Wives” star Gloria Govan, at 3 a.m. PT on the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles when he hit a guardrail. The Cadillac Escalade flipped over, but Fisher and Govan escaped injury.

Fisher played in the NBA from 1996-2014 and most recently served as coach of the New York Knicks before being fired early last year.

In a move to clear cap space and likely prepare for the arrival of Lonzo Ball, the Lakers are trading guard D’Angelo Russell and center Timofey Mozgov to the Nets for center Brook Lopez and the 27th pick in this year’s NBA Draft, according to The Vertical.

The Lakers will shed the final three years of Mozgov’s four-year, $64 million contract, along with a young starter in Russell, as they begin to target big names via trades or free agency. Lopez is on an expiring contract, making him an unrestricted free agent in 2018, the summer when LeBron James and Paul George will be unrestricted free agents.lightning_383
