Anthony saw his points-per-game average go down marginally

“NBA 2K17” projects a Cavs team with Carmelo Anthony to finish the regular season 55-27 (25-13 from this point on). The Cavs in their current form with Love are seen as a 54-28 team (24-14 from this point on).

Statistically, Anthony saw his points-per-game average go down marginally, but his rebounds and assists rose over his New York days. Compared with Love, the Cavs gained about three points and two assists with Melo, but in doing so lost five rebounds.

The one-game regular season difference was inconsequential in playoff seeding. Cleveland was the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference in all but one simulation (where Toronto managed to finish above them). They ended up having home court throughout, however, when the Raptors were bounced in the second round of that particular sim. The Golden State Warriors always finished as the team with the best record overall.

The Cowboys cut Whitehead after learning that he had reportedly missed a court date July 6.

However, Rich told ESPN Monday the 25-year-old player had been on a flight from Dallas to Washington, D.C., that landed about 10 hours after the alleged incident took place.

Whitehead himself had told Cowboys coach Jason Garrett Monday he had nothing to do with the incident.

Rapoport told Inside Training Camp Live Monday that while the Cowboys had a right to cut Whitehead, he likely has legal recourse with the police.

“There are a lot of questions, including how did police identify him as the person on the scene when he was in a different state? … A lot of questions here, but from my understanding, I would think the Cowboys can cut him whenever they want,” Rapoport said. “But he certainly would have an issue with the police if what the agent is telling me is true — if the police did (make an) error in claiming that Whitehead was arrested.”

Whitehead, a third-year player out of Florida Atlantic, was battling for a roster spot in a crowded Cowboys receiving corps. He had a combined nine catches for 64 yards in his first two seasons.rangers_567-115x115

there is always an element of surprise when the big leagues come calling.

“We’re just all kind of blessed,” Montgomery said. “It’s a great time to be a young Yankee right now. We all just kind of fit in right at the perfect time and it all happened so quick and we’re here. We’re all still fairly young.”

Despite all the effort and time spent, there is always an element of surprise when the big leagues come calling. There’s a sense of gratitude, too.

“With how baseball’s transitioned into a younger generation it’s definitely helping these younger guys get an opportunity a lot earlier in their career,” Frazier, whom the Yankees acquired from Cleveland last summer, said.

“I never thought that I was going to play for the New York Yankees ’cause I was with the Indians, so everything happens unexpectedly. I’m honestly saying this: I’m thrilled to be here and I’m proud to be a New York Yankee.”

Blue Jays (at Red Sox)
Status heading into series: 42-49, 5.5 back in the wild-card, 9 back in the AL East
Need to know: That still looks like a potentially powerful offense, and if starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez stays healthy to team with Marcus Stroman and J.A. Happ, that’s a solid top of the rotation, too. And closer Roberto Osuna made the All-Star squad. This feels like a team that could still win a postseason series or two, right? And remember that 40-18 finish to the 2015 season that led to the franchise’s first playoff berth since 1993?

On other hand: They’re seven games under .500. After crawling their way back to within a game of the .500 mark at 35-36, they’re just 7-13, which is tied for the worst record in the AL. If they decide to sell, Josh Donaldson (free agent after 2018) and Marcus Stroman (contenders love young cost-controlled starters) could bring back huge returns.

LaVar and Lonzo’s Big Baller dream is worth watching

One day, there will be a book written, a class taught or a documentary made about how, in the late 2010s, the nation became obsessed with the father of one teenage basketball player and was completely unable to quit him.

Many have said, and keep saying, LaVar Ball has to stop whatever he’s doing. They can’t stand it anymore.

Here’s an opposing view: LaVar should keep doing it.

Clippers center Marreese Speights had just one point and zero rebounds while playing 11 minutes in the first half of Tuesday’s 96-92 loss to the Jazz. He was benched after halftime as 39-year-old Paul Pierce began the second half in the post. The 29-year-old Speights did not score in the second half in only two minutes of action. Pierce had six points and three boards in 14 total minutes.

Eric Gordon may have had just eight points on 3-of-10 shooting, but he did throw down a monster dunk in the second quarter. He caught the ball behind the 3-point line, from which he went just 1 of 8, but blew past Doug McDermott for the drive to the hoop.

Game 5: Bulls at Celtcis, 8:30 p.m. ET (Series tied 2-2) — After each team won two games on the other’s home floor, the Celtics will try to win back home-court advantage at TD Garden. Isaiah Thomas and Jimmy Butler have led the way for their respective teams. Whomever gets the most help Wednesday will likely be the one with his team holding the series lead.

Carmelo Anthony wasn’t putting up big numbers in D’Antoni’s offense and gave the Knicks an ultimatum.

My teammate went and told my coaches, ‘They were calling Jeremy a ch—k the whole first half.’ I didn’t say anything, because when that stuff happens, I kind of just, I go and bottle up where I go into turtle mode and don’t say anything and just internalize everything.
Accordig to Lin, that moment was a turning point because an assistant coach told him a story about racism he dealt with as a player. The coach told him he needs to find a way to use that to motivate him, and Lin says he did just that, and still does it when he hears taunts today.

Ultimately, D’Antoni resigned from the Knicks, but in a feature with ESPN The Magazine, the coach reveals what was kind of already known: he was forced out. Carmelo Anthony wasn’t putting up big numbers in D’Antoni’s offense and gave the Knicks an ultimatum.

Here’s how D’Antoni describes it, via ESPN:

In New York in 2012, after Anthony said the team needed to choose between him and D’Antoni, Mike made it easy. I just went in and quit, he says. Don’t say ‘quit,’ Laurel says. I hate that word. You resigned. You walked away. Mutually walked away. Mike rolls his eyes and turns to me. I quit, he says.

I remember it like it was yesterday, Durant said. All the strength coaches were laughing at me and s—. They were giggling with each other that I couldn’t lift 185 pounds, and I was like, ‘All right, keep laughing. Keep laughing.’ It was a funny thing, because I was the only one that couldn’t lift it and I was struggling to lift it. I was embarrassed at that point, but I’m like, ‘Give me a basketball, please. Give me a ball.’

These days the combine is televised, but back then the results were kept secret only among those who needed to know. But the Seattle Times obtained a report from the camp and wrote a story asking if Durant needed to have Buyer Beware stickers on him. The Times reported Durant’s overall performance ranked 78th out of 80 prospects.

Derek Fisher charged with 2 counts of DUI for crash, report says

Derek Fisher has been arraigned on two counts of DUI stemming from the June 5 incident in which he flipped his SUV, TMZ Sports reported.

Fisher, 42, could face up to six months in jail if convicted on both counts, according to TMZ, but as a first-time offender he’ll likely get probation, be fined and/or ordered to undergo alcohol counseling.

Fisher was driving with his girlfriend, former “Basketball Wives” star Gloria Govan, at 3 a.m. PT on the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles when he hit a guardrail. The Cadillac Escalade flipped over, but Fisher and Govan escaped injury.

Fisher played in the NBA from 1996-2014 and most recently served as coach of the New York Knicks before being fired early last year.

In a move to clear cap space and likely prepare for the arrival of Lonzo Ball, the Lakers are trading guard D’Angelo Russell and center Timofey Mozgov to the Nets for center Brook Lopez and the 27th pick in this year’s NBA Draft, according to The Vertical.

The Lakers will shed the final three years of Mozgov’s four-year, $64 million contract, along with a young starter in Russell, as they begin to target big names via trades or free agency. Lopez is on an expiring contract, making him an unrestricted free agent in 2018, the summer when LeBron James and Paul George will be unrestricted free agents.lightning_383

Larry Fitzgerald, Eli Manning, Greg Olsen finalists for NFL Man of the Year

Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Giants quarterback Eli Manning and Panthers tight end Greg Olsen were selected as the three finalists for the 2016 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

The winner will be announced Feb. 4 at the NFL Honors awards show the night before Super Bowl LI.

Larry, Eli and Greg are not only top-tier athletes, but also men of great character, integrity and generosity of spirit. Their passion for community and helping others is having a positive impact on countless individuals and communities, and it’s something we should all celebrate NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. We commend these impressive men for setting the standard for NFL players and athletes nationwide.

Maybe it’s a coincidence that ever since Munn publicly praised Rodgers and their traditions shortly before the start of Week 12, the Packers have been riding high on an eight-game win streak. Maybe the love and support Munn provides to Rodgers has partially led to his success.

We, of course, wont ever know. Because football media culture precludes us from eulogizing the woman behind the signal caller.

And instead, if the Packers do fall before securing another Lombardi Trophy in the next few weeks, you can be sure the internet trolls will berate Munn.

Overall, Green Bays defense performed better than in a 30-16 home loss to Dallas in Week 6 despite the Cowboys actually netting five more yards (429 to 424). Running back Ezekiel Elliott was held to a more modest 125 yards on 22 carries after gouging the Packers for 157 on 28 carries in mid-October. Prescotts numbers also dipped in yards per attempt (9.1 to 7.9) and completion percentage (66.7 to 63.2) from that first meeting.steelers_012

Ref denies crew’s admitting to missed facemask call on Seahawks’ Paul Richardson

Referee Brad Allen disputes that he or anyone on his crew admitted they missed a facemask penalty on Seahawks receiver Paul Richardson during his spectacular touchdown catch in Saturday nights wild-card game in Seattle.

NBCs Michele Tafoya reported during the broadcast that Detroit coach Jim Caldwell said a member of the officiating crew told him they got it wrongby not throwing a flag on Richardson for grabbing safety Tavon Wilsons facemask as he made the catch. Wilson drew a flag for defensive pass interference on the play.

You look out there, theres two uprights youre looking at, Gano said, via the Charlotte Observer. I know the league talked to them about it before when we played here a couple years ago. So its a bit bush-league.

But once again, its not a reason why I performed poorly. It just adds another element.

Although the NFL wouldn’t officially comment on the incident, there is a league policy regarding video during kicks.

Use of video boards to distract the visiting team’s kicker during field goal attempts or extra point attempts is prohibited. Distracting video includes, but is not limited to, extreme close-ups of the face of the visiting team’s kicker and fast zooming in and out.
In cases like this, the league will check the video feed of the team to determine if a violation occurred. If they determine a team violated the policy, they will contact the club and issue a warning. If there have been previous warnings, which Gano claims there have been, the league will fine the team.rams_089

MLB Draft 2017: Why the Twins should skip the two-way star at No. 1

While holding the first pick in the MLB Draft is a somewhat “dubious honor,” to quote Crash Davis from “Bull Durham,” it does provide a team — the Twins this year — the opportunity to help turn around their organization’s fortunes.

So far this spring, three names have been linked with the Twins’ top pick in the 2017 MLB Draft: Hunter Greene, Kyle Wright, and Brendan McKay. The first two would be solid choices; the third would not. More on that in a bit.

Merchant hit .265 and stole 33 bases in 50 games that first season. The next year, while playing for the Pirates’ Class A affiliate in Augusta, Ga., he separated his throwing shoulder while diving for a ball. His season ended after 60 games.

The Pirates traded Merchant the next season, including him in a five-player deal that ironically landed him in the Mariners organization. While playing for Class AA Jacksonville in 1991, Merchant broke his right ankle.

“I knew that night I was in trouble,” he said. “I never got my speed back again.”

Merchant went on to also play in the Reds, White Sox and Royals organizations. His career also included two stints with independent league teams and time in the Mexican League. His best year came in 1993 while playing for the Reds’ AA affiliate in Chattanooga, Tenn. There, he hit .301 with 17 home runs in 109 games, earning him his first promotion to Triple-A.nike_cardinals_1608

It’s sort of a strange tribute because four of the six players spent their entire careers with the Dolphins.

The immortal moments of Sunday’s game put it on that pedestal, too. Julian Edelman’s ricochet catch late in the fourth, on the game-tying drive, is arguably the greatest in Super Bowl history.

The fact that the Patriots pulled off two touchdowns and a couple two-point conversions to tie it — brutally hard to do under any circumstances — qualifies it, as well.

Brady had no choice but to keep throwing it after falling so far behind, and after throwing his first postseason pick-six ever … and he set Super Bowl records for passes thrown and yardage.

There were unsung heroes like James White and Marcus Mitchell, MVPs humbled like Matt Ryan, stars who shined in defeat like Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman, strategic blunders, dramatic turning points, unforgivable gaffes even by the winning team (the clanked extra-point kick).

It’s sort of a strange tribute because four of the six players spent their entire careers with the Dolphins. Only Little, whose first two seasons were spent with the Chargers, and Madison, who played the final three seasons of a 12-year career with the Giants, were with other teams.

“In this day and age, we try to get players to retire as Dolphins,” executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said during the signing ceremony. “This means a lot to us, our legacy. We’re all so proud of it and all the contributions you guys have made, it means a lot to all of us. We thank you guys and we’re proud that you’re Dolphins.”

The six players combined for two NFL MVP awards — Griese in 1971 and Marino in 1984 — 14 first-team All-Pros selections and 25 Pro Bowl invitations.

Griese helped lead the Dolphins to their only two Super Bowl championships during their undefeated 1972 season and again in 1973.

Marino retired as the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards, completions, attempts and touchdowns — and remains among the top five all time in each of those categories.seahawks_011

Ironic twist to Cam Newton’s Super Bowl 51 commercial for Buick

Mahomes, a gunslinger, reminds of a less refined version of Matthew Stafford. He has similar arm talent and reckless behaviors that will give his future offensive coordinator headaches early in his NFL career. But in a quarterback class that, as of now, doesn’t have a sure bet as a top prospect, I can live with taking the passer who has the most upside as a quarterback.

Mahomes is still skittish in the pocket (because of a lack of development, not out of fear of contact) and makes throws and decisions much harder than they should be. But once he can be reigned in as a progression passer, Mahomes could be similar, if not a better version of Matt Stafford or, at worst, Jay Cutler. He’s worth a top 20 pick and could emerge as a top 10 candidate by the time the process is through.

Cam Newton is set to star in a Super Bowl commercial for Buick, the same brand of car that crashed into his truck on December 9, 2014.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback suffered two back fractures when his Dodge truck collided with a Buick sedan and flipped multiple times.

Fast forward two years later — and the 27-year-old will promote the car brand on the sports world’s biggest marketing stage, alongside supermodel Miranda Kerr.
